<image:title>Expedition One - Fisherman feeding a Whale Shark off Oslob. in the Phillipines.</image:title>
<image:caption>At Oslob, in the Philippines, local fishers began to hand-feed wild whale sharks with shrimp to stop them from disrupting their fishing. This quickly became a major tourist attraction. A guaranteed shark encounter is now available at this site, introducing well over 100, 000 people a year to these threatened giants. However, some sharks have become habituated to feeding, changing their migratory patterns to take advantage of this handout. Many sharks are now accumulating injuries as they continually rub against the boats, and some have been badly wounded by propeller cuts. <image:title>Expedition One - Female Whale Shark off Darwin Island in the northern Galapagos archipelago.</image:title>
<image:caption>Few animals are as enigmatic as the whale shark. Globally threatened, only juvenile males are typically found in coastal waters. To see the real giants, such as this pregnant female, intrepid divers must venture to remote seamounts like Darwin Island in the northern Galapagos archipelago. The largest whale shark measured was 20 m long, and they reach at least 34 t. Image by Simon Pierce Instagram: @simonjpierce</image:caption>

      <image:title>Expedition One - Whale Shark Silhouette</image:title>
<image:caption>The best available science tells us that, managed carefully, whale shark tourism can be sustainable, both for sharks and people. Personally, I prefer to avoid areas where whale sharks are fed, and focus on the more natural encounters available at other locations like Tofo in Mozambique, Leyte in the Philippines or Mafia Island in Tanzania. Tourists can even assist with shark research. Because each individual has a unique spot pattern, photos can be used to count the number of whale sharks in the world. Over 4000 tourists and researchers have submitted photos to a global sighting database (www.whaleshark.org), identifying over 6000 whale sharks from over 40 countries. <image:title>Expedition One - Whale Shark off Isla Mujeres, Mexico.</image:title>
<image:caption>Although they are true sharks, whale sharks are totally harmless to people. Rather than relying on their tiny teeth to grasp prey, they use suction to vacuum up zooplankton. A medium-sized whale shark can filter over 600, 000 litres of seawater an hour. Here, the shark is feeding on tuna spawn off Isla Mujeres in Mexico.
